Celebrate the North American River Otter

Discover the playful side of the 1000 Islands and get to know Oliver, Ivy and Brock, our on site residents.

The wily river otter is equally at home on land and in water, making it perfectly adaptable to all sorts of ecosystems in the 1000 Islands. These web-footed members of the weasel family are renowned for their sense of fun.

Despite their silliness river otters are predators, and you might spot them hunting for fish, crayfish, turtles and frogs. Their large molars are also ideal for crushing the hard shells of freshwater mollusks found in the St. Lawrence River and 1000 Islands. These energetic mammals are active year-round, and while they are most lively at twilight, their days are just as full of playing, swimming, grooming and hunting.
