Brockville ON – The otters have arrived safe and sound at the Aquatarium!
The otters arrived safe and sound in late January at their new home at the Aquatarium. Two males and a female arrived in Brockville via a donated private jet – first class all the way! They have been getting used to their new habitat and each one has a very distinct personality. Our two males are quite chill and very inquisitive. Our female likes her own space and regularly tells the Animal Husbandry team what she wants and doesn’t want to do.
They love their play area and are eating very well. We feed the otters a huge range of different fish, chicken, eggs and even lots of fresh vegetables! We are learning about what each likes to snack on and we make sure they are getting lots of them. They’re an inquisitive bunch, who are delighted when given their treats. They also love the water. Their thick coats and layer of fat waterproof and insulate them from cold water and frigid temperatures.
Our animal husbandry team is working closely with the otters to form a bond and to best understand the personalities and needs of each otter. We have a veterinarian team that is keeping a close eye on them to ensure they are healthy and adjusting well.
“I am very pleased with their progress to date and am looking forward to having them interact with our visitors” says Thomas Harder, the Aquatarium’s Director of Animal Husbandry.
The Aquatarium is an interactive, learning and discovery centre located on the shore of the St. Lawrence River that will focus on building awareness and appreciation for the 1000 Islands region by inspiring curiosity through experiential learning. The Aquatarium will be opening to the public very soon.
