A Note From Our Education Department – Dec. 2016

Seasons Greetings!

Before jumping full-swing into the Holidays, let’s take a moment to reflect on what has taken place in the Education department at the Aquatarium over the last little while.

To start, I am delighted to introduce to you our newest team member, Kashka Ironside. Kashka has joined the Education Department at the Aquatarium as a Program Facilitator. After studying Music Education and Mathematics at Queen’s University, Kashka worked at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre, where she developed experiential learning-based programming that explored the arts, leadership and student voice. With over nine years of experience in education and program development, she is excited to share her passion for learning, science and the environment through meaningful programming with all the students who visit the Aquatarium. We are so lucky to have her on our team! Next time you’re in, please say hello to Kashka.

At the beginning of November we kicked off our Junior Scientist Program with much success.  In session one, our Junior Scientists were diligently exploring different types of fossils and had a chance to make an encasement fossil of their own! In session two, our young scientists learned all about our Solar System in the Planetarium with local astronomy-enthusiast, Paul Bullock.  This was an exceptional learning opportunity for all. We look forward to welcoming Paul back into our ‘space’ again soon!  Download a Junior Scientist registration form here: Junior Scientists Program  Note: spaces are limited, so register today!

With the academic semester winding down, we are sad to say goodbye to our four Co-op students who have been working with us over the last four months. Austin, Tyler, Zach, and Cole have learned a lot about what we do here at the Aquatarium and have proved a tremendous help to their respective departments! Thank you for choosing the Aquatarium for your placement this semester. We wish you the best of luck and continued success in your studies!

Dave Sheridan has been working with students from a local high school in Brockville to finish a bilingual project for the Aquatarium. To better serve our French guests, students from T.I.S.S have generously helped translate our signage from English-only into English and French. Merci beaucoup à tous!

We continue to welcome K-12 school groups into our learning and discovery centre Monday-Friday for self-guided tours and hands-on activities. Book your class trip today Click here. Want to check us out before bringing your students? No problem! We are very happy to give teachers a complimentary tour of our exhibits prior to visiting with students.

As you begin your festivities, may the magic and wonder of the Holiday season stay with you throughout the coming year. With 2017 just around the corner it is important to remember a new year brings an opportunity for review and change. We challenge you to take intentional time out of the hustle and bustle of the season to reflect on how you can make 2017 your best year yet!

We wish you and your family a very happy and healthy Holiday.

Kashka & Jessica
